How often do I need to brush my teeth?
You should brush your teeth at least twice a day, in the morning and before bed. We strongly recommend that you also brush your teeth after every meal.

Do I need a special toothbrush?
We recommend a soft bristle toothbrush. Some
patients purchase an electric toothbrush and are pleased with its effectiveness. We also recommend using a WATER-PIK before brushing to dislodge food particles that are caught in the braces.

What is the most effective way to brush?
Start with the upper left and work your way around to the upper right, then the lower right, then the lower left. Place the bristles on the tooth between the brace and the gums. Gently massage this area to avoid puffy tissue and cavities. After cleaning the teeth, force the bristles between the brace and the wire to clean the area between the wire and the teeth.

Do I need to floss with braces?
Yes! Flossing will allow you to remove plaque that accumulates between your teeth. This takes time to master but it is an important step. Practice makes perfect!

Are regular cleanings at my regular dentist still necessary?
Yes. We recommend a cleaning, a fluoride treatment, and a checkup every 4-6 months with x-rays if appropriate.

What can I do at home to fight cavities?
We will give you a bottle of fluoride to use before you go to bed. Remember not to eat or drink anything after you place the gel on your teeth.
